Morro Bay and beyond

We were so happy to leave the LA traffic behind! It was a great time, but the open road was calling. We stopped for lunch in Santa Maria and met a couple of Ron's 2nd cousins, Mario and "Smiley". Ron and his cousins recounted their experiences growing up in Olmito.

We arrived at our hotel in Morro Bay under a blanket of fog. It was chilly and I was unsure if I had picked a good spot. We have grown to love this place with its rooftop lounge, uncrowded beaches and wildlife. The first thing we noticed were all of the nesting birds.

Later we discovered otters in the bay and a pod of whales playing just out of the harbor.

Ron was able to visit with his half sister Debra and compare life stories.

We were able to hike the many beautiful trails in the area:

Black Hill trail with it's ancient oaks.

Bishop's Peak, San Louis Obispo

Montana de Oro bluff trail.

Moonstone Beach, Cambria. I wish I had known there weren't really Moonstones there, just pretty rock. I found a bunch!

We're currently over nighting in Mt Shasta. It's super hot and smokey. Drats! Darn global warming. We had to change our plans and tomorrow we will be in Depoe Bay, Oregon.
